PONGO DE MAINIQUE - 04 DAYS

In the Andes Mountains (Vilcanota range) originates one of Peru's most important rivers: the Vilcanota (also known as the Wilcamayu or Urubamba). This river flows through the entire Cusco region, forming the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. For its 200-kilometer course, the river is called the Vilcanota, and then, as it flows through the Urubamba Valley, it becomes known as the Urubamba, before disappearing among the verdant mountains of the Cusco rainforest.

Pongo de Mainique is a canyon approximately 3 kilometers long, through which the river flows with abrupt drops and torrents of water (up to 30 waterfalls), separating the upper Urubamba from the lower Urubamba. In other words, it leaves behind the last eastern Andean foothills and enters the vast Amazonian plain (an area where the waters become navigable). The Pongo de Mainique has a large tributary that makes it navigable. However, during the rainy season (between January and March), strong whirlpools and torrential currents make it a dangerous passage for boats. The Pongo de Mainique, with its verdant, mountainous cliffs reaching up to 1,200 meters in height, is only 45 meters wide and offers exceptional scenery.

Pongo de Mainique (450 meters above sea level) is located on the border of the districts of Echarate and Megantoni in the province of La Convención (jungle region) of the Cusco Department. It begins at the Yoyato River and ends at the Toteoroato River ravine (also known as the Snail River). Its name is related to the Quechua word "Punku" (Gateway). The area is protected by the Peruvian government and is designated the Megantoni National Sanctuary.

Pongo de Mainique was formed millions of years ago by erosion and the force of powerful waters that carved their path through the forested mountain range. This area was and is inhabited by various Amazonian tribes (Matsigenka) in the Camisea, Manu, Picha, and Timpía regions. According to the Machiguenga worldview; Mainique rapids are a sacred place and a gateway connecting the mountainous and jungle worlds (it is believed that rapids gave rise to their ethnic group). Amazonian ethnic groups traded with the Incas who inhabited the upper Urubamba region. The products the Incas obtained from the Mainique rapids included coca leaves, cacao, and various fruits. The Incas, aware of the rapids' importance, also considered them a sacred and impenetrable place.

Pongo de Mainique has a hot and humid climate with temperatures reaching a maximum of 32°C and a minimum of 17°C. Rain can occur in any month of the year. However, it is more frequent from December to March (rainy season), when the rapids become dangerous. The rest of the year, from April to November, is recommended for visiting.

    MEGANTONI NATIONAL SANCTUARY

Due to the biological and cultural importance of the Mainique Gorge and the surrounding forested areas, on August 18, 2004, the Peruvian authorities created the Megantoni National Sanctuary. Its purpose was to conserve the natural environment and protect the indigenous communities that inhabit the area. It covers an area of 215,868 hectares (including the Mainique Gorge, Lake Ángel, and more). In addition to the Machiguenga people, Megantoni is home to other indigenous groups living in voluntary isolation, such as the Nanty and Kugapakori.
